Bozeman BPW Celebrates Take Our Daughters to Work Day
April 19, 1999
Luncheon and Job Shadowing Planned for April 28
Bozeman, MT - Bozeman Business and Professional Women (BPW) is planning a special luncheon
program and an afternoon of "job shadowing" on Weds., April 28 to celebrate Take Our Daughters
to Work Day (TODTW). Started in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation for Women to foster girls'
self-esteem and introduce them to career opportunities, TODTW is observed by women and men
throughout the country, with thousands of companies playing host to girls. BPW has scheduled
three speakers for their luncheon program from noon to 1 p.m. on April 28 at Zajdel's Restaurant
in the Elks Club (106 E. Babcock). Featured luncheon speakers include:
- Bozeman High school student Emily Johnson who will
give a PowerPoint business presentation on "Organizing Your Work Space";
- MSU college senior Karen Moss who will speak on the
changing perspective of non-traditional job and career choices for women. Her talk is titled
"If Only I'd Known Then What I Know Now ... Look Out World!";
- School superintendent Paula Butterfield who will discuss
the importance of asking for what you want to increase your odds of getting it.
After lunch, BPW members and other interested members of the community will team up with a high school
girl who has been assigned to them based on similar career interests. The girls will "shadow" the working
women for some or all of the afternoon. In promoting this special day, BPW hopes to create an
opportunity for young women to begin looking to their futures in the workforce with realism and optimism.
Bozeman BPW member Ris Higgins, coordinator for TODTW, said recently, "It should be a great day for the
girls and wonderful chance for professional people in our community to make a difference in
these girls' lives." Higgins will provide a "conversational game plan" so that hosts will have
a series of questions to draw from when talking with the girls.
BPW encourages all working professionals in Bozeman to get involved in this exhilarating day.
Members of the public are invited to attend the luncheon and should call Ris Higgins at 585-0770
for more information and to sign up. April 23 is the deadline for sign-ups.
Bozeman BPW organization began participating in the annual April event three years ago and aims
to grow the program so that the girls in our community are better aware of diversity of career
possibilities available to them.
Bozeman BPW is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization devoted to achieving equity for
all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.
