Bozeman BPW Celebrates "Take Our Daughters to Work Day"
Luncheon and Job Shadowing Today April 26, 2000

Bozeman, MT - Bozeman Business and Professional Women (BPW) has planned a special luncheon program and an afternoon of "job shadowing" today, Weds., April 26, to celebrate Take Our Daughters to Work (TODTW) Day. Started in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation for Women to introduce girls to the workplace and different career opportunities, TODTW is observed by women and men throughout the country, with thousands of companies playing host to girls. BPW has scheduled four speakers for their luncheon program today from noon to 1 p.m. at Zajdel's Restaurant in the Elks Club (106 E. Babcock).

This year, BPW coordinators for TODTW asked high school girls in advance which professions they were most interested in learning more about. Based on their input, the following luncheon speakers were selected:
  • Laura Fedro, a BPW member who owns her own interior design business
  • Gail Schontzler, a Bozeman Daily Chronicle news reporter
  • Donna Marie Frid, a new BPW member who is a real estate agent
  • Karen Watson, a therapist practicing in Bozeman
After lunch, BPW members will team up with a high school girl who has been assigned to them based on similar career interests. The girls will talk with the women at Zajdel's or "shadow" them at their workplaces for part of the afternoon. In promoting this special day, BPW hopes to create an opportunity for young women to begin looking to their futures in the workforce with realism and optimism.

Bozeman BPW member Laura Gittings-Carlson, a coordinator for TODTW, said recently, "It should be a fantastic day for the girls and wonderful chance for professional women in our community to make a difference in these girls' lives." Nationally, TODTW will be celebrated tomorrow, April 27th.

Bozeman BPW meets regularly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The organization began participating in the annual April event four years ago and aims to grow the program so that the girls in our community are better aware of the diversity of career possibilities available to them.
