KATHLEEN CHAFEY AWARDED BPW WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT

Bozeman BPW Celebrated Accomplishments of Women in Community

Bozeman, Mont., March 12, 2008 – The Bozeman Business and Professional Women (BPW) is proud to announce Kathleen (Kay) Chafey as the winner of the 2008 Woman of Achievement Award. Mayor Kaaren Jacobson presented the award to Chafey at the BPW Ceremony on March 4, 2008. Commemorating the important contributions of women, nominees included Carol Townsend and Deidre Combs.

“The Woman of Achievement program provides the opportunity to honor women who are making a difference in our community,” stated BPW President Lindsey VanHemelryck. “All three of these women deserved to win; they have all contributed to the growth and empowerment of women in the workplace through advocacy, education and promotion.”

Chafey has dedicated the past 30 years to improving public health and education in Montana. Her extensive background includes a B.S. in Nursing, an M.S. in Public Health Nursing and a PhD in Developmental Psychology. Kay has earned numerous accolades including the Betty Coffey and the Jo Eleanor Elliott Leadership Awards, and has received over 12 million dollars in grants to support initiatives for women. Currently serving as the Vice President of the First Security Bank Board of Directors and President of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Kay continues to dedicate her knowledge, experience and skills to helping women advance in education, business, athletics and public service.

“Kay has been adamant about improving the workplace and educational opportunities for young girls and women,” stated Norma Boetel, owner of Boetel Agency. “As the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors for First Security Bank, Kay has also been a strong advocate for recruiting other women to serve on similar boards throughout the community.”

The Woman of Achievement Awards Ceremony was held at the Bozeman Public Library on March 4, 2008. Mayor Kaaren Jacobson was in attendance to present the Award and honor all attendees with a brief presentation on the strength and success of women in the workplace. Nominating representatives spoke on behalf of each nominee, and a full house of BPW members, family, and friends celebrated the accomplishments of Chafey, Combs and Townsend. Upon being awarded the Woman of Achievement honor, Chafey stated, “it has taken me thirty years to complete some of my goals, but persistence and teamwork have been on my side.”
